Does EFT Really Work?

When someone first learns about Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), the newest discovery in the field of energy medicine, skepticism can run understandably high. Perhaps it was just this kind of skepticism of EFT that made you decide to read this article.

EFT and science

As we are still in the very early years of the 21st century, we must acknowledge that science still Does not have a complete explanation for electricity, magnetism or flight; in the area of medicine, science does not know exactly how aspirin works, either. Thankfully, no one is required to know how digestion occurs in order to convert lunch into living tissue cells. The point is that much more is unknown about our bodies – and science in general – than is known. In spite of this, we all take advantage of the tendency of our bodies to operate nicely without our personal knowledge or assistance to keep us alive and well, for the most part. Even though individuals might be disturbed and surprised by a the many areas in which science lacks complete knowledge, science itself is quite comfortable acknowledging the many gaps in its understanding of the physical world.

In keeping with this lack of information, our scientific knowledge of brain anatomy and physiology is far from total. Science is just beginning to comprehend the complexity of the brain, as it learns all that it does not know, and knows even less how thinking, mind and the emotions originate or influence us. And so, when Emotional Freedom Techniques is considered as a new therapeutic entry in Alternative Medicine, the small science that supports it should be no surprise. There are many disciplines that also share the little true science to explain its prompt and permanent effects on human emotions. Some might hesitate to use EFT because it is not fully understood, thinking this is a defect of Emotional Freedom Technique. Yet, these same people might think nothing of using mind-altering medications (antidepressants, tranquilizers, or similar mood altering medication), not realizing that little is known about them, either.

Given the recent introduction of Emotional Freedom Technique into the therapeutic arsenal of Alternative Medicine, it is understandable there is still incomplete understanding in spite of its growing use within the field.

EFT and research

Compared to many other therapeutic disciplines, EFT is being incorporated in an acceptably typical, deliberate and slow pace into the medical community. This should not be interpreted that EFT does not possess and express good science. This only means EFT concerns itself with a most complex function of the most complex part of the human anatomy – the brain – and that appropriate time and effort will be needed to sort the complex issues involved. On this basis, it is important that no one should allow a gap in our scientific understanding of EFT to dissuade joining the large and growing legion who benefit from it.

The first EFT study ever published, funded by the American Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology, reported in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in 2003, documented positive treatment outcomes for small animal phobias via a single EFT session.

Secondaly, also in 2003, by The Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice, involved 119 students who had specific phobias or fears. This study also reported positive outcomes to EFT therapy. It also supported the idea of energy movement that can occur by direct physical means, and raised the possibility energy movement might occur also through mental focus stimulated by concentration and belief.

The third and most recent review of EFT efficacy, found in Counseling and Clinical Psychology, in 2005, stated positive short- and long-term benefits of EFT treatment for emotional or psychological distress, as determined by standard SA-45 evaluation.

Conclusion of scientific studies of EFT

By these early and limited evaluations of EFT, positive yet inconclusive findings are clearly demonstrated, all without significant negative findings. This further offersi early indications that EFT does indeed Work. Certainly, much more aggressive and insightfu investigations will have to be done in the near future if EFT is to make more inroads into standard medical psychological practice . Meanwhile, thousands of times a day, people from all over the world discove the unique and lastly benefits of Emotional Freedom Technique. From the first-hand experience of those who use the simple method of EFT tapping, they can answer “yes” to the question, “Does EFT really Work?”
