Pain Management With EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)
Article by Pat Burns
Pain is our body sending us a message!
No matter what the cause of the pain is, our body is telling us to pay attention, and that’s what we need to do. There is always a reason for the message, whether we recognize it or not.
It’s a medical fact that our emotions trigger different chemicals in our bodies. Happy emotions can produce healing and calming chemicals, but negative emotions can create disease causing chemistry in our bodies. You’re probably already familiar with how stress contributes to high blood pressure, headaches and body pain, depending on where in your body your hold your stress. It’s common for people to hold stress across their shoulders and neck, resulting in what can be chronic pain in those areas.
What if it’s ALL physical?
Even for pain with a definite physical origin, EFT can be very effective. If you suffer from something like arthritic joints, you’ll probably have to tap periodically in order to maintain a level of comfort, but you can definitely use EFT to make yourself much more comfortable, no matter what the source of your pain is.
I’ve had 2 bad discs in my spine for years, and my back would periodically “go out”, sometimes putting me in bed for days, but with regular tapping I find that I seldom have problems with my back, and can lay in any position at night, which I was not able to do previously.
How to create your own tapping statements for pain.
Really TUNE IN to the painBe very aware of where the pain is and exactly how it feels.Describe the pain: – be very specificLocation: Exactly where in your body is the pain? For example, if you have a pain in your right leg, be specific about where in your leg it is, as in “Even though I have this pain in the back middle of my thigh…”Color: If your pain had a color, what would it be? Visualize the pain in your mind.Size: How big is your pain? Is it the size of a tennis ball, or is it so big that it feels like it fills your chest or stomach or back or whatever? What does the pain remind you of?: Does it feel like a knife sticking in you, or a band tightening around you, or a jagged piece of glass? Really get into that feeling and describe it.What is the pain level? On a scale of 1 tCreate your tapping statement using the words that you came up with to describe your pain.Tap 2 to 3 rounds using those tapping statements.Reassess pain level and do additional rounds of tapping as needed to bring your pain level down to zero.
Example Script: Tapping for knee pain
Setup – Karate chop:
